For love that’s out there.

Planning a wedding should be exciting, not a full-time job.

Whether you’re dreaming of an intimate ceremony under the gum trees, a big country wedding on a cattle station or a backyard celebration with all your favourite people, the best weddings are the ones that feel like you.

Forget the rulebook. Here’s what you actually need to think about.

1. Pick a Location That Feels Like You

A wedding doesn’t have to happen in a traditional venue.

Think rural properties, cattle stations, national parks, tropical gardens or somewhere completely unexpected.

Before falling in love with a location, check:

  • Can guests and suppliers safely access it?
  • Is permission required to hold a ceremony or event?
  • Are toilets, drinking water and parking available?
  • Is there power, lighting and mobile reception?
  • Is there suitable shelter or a backup location?
  • Can emergency services access the property if needed?

For national parks, remote communities and other special locations, check permissions and access requirements with the relevant land manager or Traditional Owners.

2. Get Your Wedding Dream Team Together

Your celebrant, photographer, DJ, MC, caterer and other suppliers all contribute to the atmosphere of your day.

Choose people you genuinely connect with. They’re going to be part of some pretty special moments, so personality matters just as much as experience.

And remember, some suppliers book out well in advance, particularly during the NT’s popular dry-season wedding months.

3. Make the Ceremony Your Own

Your ceremony doesn’t need to follow a traditional script.

Want your dog to deliver the rings? A surprise reading? A themed dress code? A ceremony with a little humour?

Go for it!

The most memorable ceremonies are the ones that tell your story, celebrate your personalities and include the people and things you love.

Your celebrant can guide you through the legal requirements while helping you create something personal and meaningful.

4. Think About the Weather

The Top End is spectacular, but Mother Nature doesn’t always follow the wedding run sheet.

For outdoor weddings, consider:

  • Heat, humidity and shade for guests
  • Wet-season storms and rain
  • Insects, including mosquitoes and midges
  • Wind and its effect on decorations and sound equipment
  • Safe shelter for guests and suppliers
  • Drinking water and suitable amenities

Have a backup plan, especially if your wedding is outdoors.

5. Sort Out Your Sound and Power

There’s nothing worse than guests struggling to hear the ceremony or the music cutting out halfway through the first dance.

If you’re getting married somewhere remote, check your power requirements well before the big day.

A generator can be a great solution, but remember they’re not always quiet!

Cassie’s Wild Tip:
If you’re using a generator, position it far enough away that it won’t drown out your vows or interrupt speeches. Make sure it’s suitable for your equipment, safely installed and protected from the weather. And always have enough fuel!

6. Plan the Flow, Not Every Second

A wedding run sheet is a lifesaver, but you don’t need to schedule every minute.

Allow time for photographs, drinks, food, speeches and the unexpected moments that make weddings memorable.

A good MC can help keep things moving without making your wedding feel like a corporate conference.

7. Remember Why You’re Doing It

It’s easy to get caught up in decorations, seating charts and endless decisions.

But at the end of the day, it’s about celebrating your relationship with the people you love.

Make it meaningful. Make it memorable. Make it yours.
